Protect Your Investment During Winter Months

By January 28, 2013No Comments

During Utah County’s cold winter months, our patients at Spa Trouvé often seek recommendations on products to protect their skin. This is especially true if they have invested in a laser treatment, advanced exfoliation or resurfacing procedure.  Although each person’s skin type varies, below are some elements that can be added to any daily regimen to leave skin (especially healing skin) feeling refreshed and renewed, but also protected.

Protect.

The harsh winds during Utah’s coldest months tend to be unforgiving on delicate skin and will leave skin feeling dry and damaged. To protect against the elements, look for products with zinc oxide. This ingredient is most commonly known for its ability to protect against photodamage (the suns UV rays), but what most people don’t know is that it also acts as an occlusive. This means it acts as a physical barrier on the skin to protect it from the surrounding environment.  In addition to its protective capabilities, zinc oxide is also anti-inflammatory, making it perfect for skin post treatment for any kind of inflammatory skin condition (e.g. rosacea, anceic breakouts).

Replenish.

During winter, space heaters can make any area more comfortable and cozy, but they can also dehydrate your skin. Dehydration is a lack of water in the skin and is not only uncomfortable but can also lead to an uneven, aged appearance.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring ingredient that holds 1,000x its weight in water. Because our body produces it internally, it makes it more easily assimilated into the skin when applied topically. Products that incorporate this ingredient give skin a plump and smooth appearance.  Also, since hydrating your skin increases its water content, its preps the surface for a moisturizing product to be applied afterwards.

Prevent.

Changes in temperature and humidity levels during wintertime dry the skin and wear it out. Dryness is often times confused with dehydration, but it’s important to know the difference between the two because they are treated differently. As discussed above, dehydration is a lack of water, while dryness is a lack of oil. Dehydrated skin needs to be hydrated and dry skin needs to be moisturized. The oil in moisturizing products aims to form a barrier at the skin’s surface to seal in moisture. As an added benefit, other ingredients like Vitamin E help to replace lost lipids while providing antioxidant properties.

Rejuvenate.

Cleansing is necessary to remove dirt, makeup and oil no matter what season it is. However, during the winter it’s sometimes necessary to choose a cleanser that will effectively clean sensitized skin without irritating it further. This is especially true if regular resurfacing procedures are being done.
